Writing and Editing

Susan K. Flinn writes and edits materials for readers of all backgrounds. As a writer, she drafts documents for general audiences, public health practitioners, and policymakers. Her work has been published by Federal agencies, advocacy organizations, and public health associations. As an editor, she collaborates with authors to make their work as good as it can be, respecting their creation while providing suggestions and/or additions to perfect the final product. She has edited documents for both national and international non-profit and advocacy organizations. She is the medical editor for AAP Clinical Practice Guidelines on pediatric obesity, failure to thrive, and opioid use; and is co-writing a clinical report on Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS).
Projects include:
- Provided writing and editing services to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital for its successful $50 million HRSA grant to fund the new Regional Pediatric Pandemic Network.
- Writing a chapter on “Contraceptive Equity and Black Women,” which appeared in Our Bodies, Our Lives, Our Voices: The State of Black Women & Reproductive Justice, Washington DC: In Our Own Voice, 2017.
- Co-writing a series of documents for the AAP on advocacy achievements, next steps, and recommendations for federal action. These documents were designed to inform pediatricians about issues of concern during the 2016 and 2018 elections.
- Serving as the technical/medical writer for numerous projects at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), including the Board-directed Visions 2020: Future of Pediatrics Task Force Report; multiple meeting reports and proceedings; technical reports, including the Technical Report on Newborn Male Circumcision; and various Clinical Practice Guidelines, including CPGs on Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Treatment of Children and Adolescents With Obesity; Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Treatment of Attention-Deficit/
Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents; Screening and Management of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents; Management of Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in Children and Adolescents, among others. - Editing the National Women’s Health Network’s bi-monthly newsletter, The Women’s Health Activist.
- Editing the Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda, on 25 issues compiled by more than 30 Black RJ organizations and activists. This document is an update to the 2017 policy agenda, which Susan also edited.
